Company Name: Lily and May – Floral Design

Website: www.lilyandmay.co.uk

Location: Brentwood, Essex

How did Lily and May get started and how long has the business been going?

The idea of the business started over 6 years ago whist on honeymoon in Italy; I was very much a creative trapped in a corporate world! Lily & May was born early 2010.

Who works at Lily and May?

Myself and my assistant Tasha (she keeps me sane!).

Why is the business called Lily and May?

The Lily component is named after my great-grandmother. Growing up I had always been referred to as May (my maiden name) name so this is a reference to myself.

Where is Lily and May based and do you have a shop? Which areas of the UK do you cover?

All work and consultations are carried out in the studio at home, which is my little sanctuary. All areas of Essex are covered along with some parts of London.

What type of flowers can you provide for a wedding?

Every aspect of floral decoration can be provided for a wedding, from bouquets and buttonholes to venue and church dressing.

What sets Lily and May apart from other wedding florists?

I think it is really important to spend time with the client to gain a good solid understanding of their likes and dislikes. I ensure the flowers really reflect the style of the client and that each wedding is unique by adding my own personal touch to every design I work on.

What flowers and colours were most requested for 2011 weddings?

2011 was the year of the purple and plum-wedding colour schemes, with brides becoming very brave with their colours by requesting bold designs. The Amnesia rose was very popular along with hydrangea.

What do you think will be the trend for 2012 wedding flowers in terms of style and colours?

Apricots and nudes are becoming increasingly popular with vintage style designs still remaining in high demand.

Does Lily and May have a specialist floral area?

I love creating arrangements that look luxurious so tend to pack designs with lots of blooms; I also love vintage style arrangements as these are timeless.

What are your top tips for choosing wedding flowers?

  • Before meeting with a florist ensure that you have decided on your dress and if possible a colour scheme as these will help to theme the flowers.
  • Let the florist know your budget as this will help with suggestions.
  • Always meet with your florist, as it’s important to feel you can trust their judgement.
  • Try not to follow fashions; always choose designs because you like them.

Random question… Who is your idol?

Jo Malone. To start and manage an international brand from the bottom up is awe-inspiring. She is a great role model for women.

Do you have a favourite floral arrangement for a wedding that you have made?

Such a difficult question as my favourites change depending on my mood, but if forced I would have to say this vintage bouquet using Essex grown roses – timeless!

What is your favourite flower?

Lily of the Valley. I was lucky enough to have a bouquet for my own wedding made purely from this flower, made by my very talented mother in law.

Fancy something a little bit different or a little bit quirky for your wedding flowers? How about succulents? Succulents come in amazing shapes and textures and certainly add the wow factor to bouquets, table centres and wedding decorations. Succulents are longer lasting than flowers so make great wedding favours that you could make yourself.

These are some of The Wedding Community’s favourite ways of incorporating succulents into your wedding.

When it comes to your wedding flowers, be a green, eco-friendly bride. It’s all the rage, and it’s the easiest thing to do…

Choose flowers that are in season. You will get better quality, price, and they will have probably been grown a lot closer to home. If you aren’t sure what is in season around in the month you are getting married, have a look at the Flowers & Plants Association.

Ask your florist to source your flowers from UK growers. Although the choice isn’t as vast, you can still get a whole host of beautiful blooms, especially in the summer months. Look out for Roses, Delphiniums, Lisianthus, Freesias and Sweet Peas, to name just a few…

Peonies – Moody Monday

September 12th, 2011 | Posted by The Wedding Community in Mood Boards - (2 Comments)

Peonies are one of our favourite wedding flowers so we felt we should share some of our favourite peony wedding flower ideas with you. Peonies are the perfect flower if you are having a vintage style wedding, marquee or garden party, or are simply looking for beautiful, soft floral arrangements. Peonies come in a variety of colours from whites, soft pinks and peaches, to vivid pinks and purples, and the great thing about peonies is they have different blooms in spring and early summer depending on the variety, so you could have small tight buds or giant open flowers giving a completely different look. Talk to your wedding florist about the different variations and what is available for the time of year.

Wedding buttonholes

Buttonholes have come a long way from the days of tiny carnations wrapped in tin foil (although I did witness something similar at a hotel a year or so ago, and I wasn’t best pleased!)

All men deserve to wear a beautiful (little) bunch of blooms on their big day. It’s not all about us girls, and I honestly think that grooms are really starting to care about the flower/s that they wear as their buttonhole on their wedding day…

Butterfly Accessories for Wedding Flowers

Image Courtesy of Fairy Nuff Flowers

Flowers are truly beautiful things, obviously, but they can be made even more special and personal by incorporating cute accessories in to your wedding bouquets or table centres. They can even help out with your old, new, borrowed or blue.

Last year there were a couple of trends that kept popping up; vintage buttons, and butterflies of all descriptions… and they are still fluttering in 2011 which does make me happy. Give me a butterfly or a bow and I’m a happy flower girl.

We also use a lot of Swarovski Crystals in our wedding flowers. They work wonderfully if you have a tricky colour theme that you want to match up, and can’t quite find the perfect colour of rose or hydrangea.  Get your florist to wire in some crystals or beads to match – they transform neutral bouquets.

I could go on and on about pretty accessories, but here are my top five wedding flower accessories…

To complete your vintage style wedding, how about using beautiful vintage tins as decorations. These are great used as vases and planters to display flowers in and are cheaper than hiring or buying vases. A simple vintage style tin with a few flowers in will look great on any wedding table. You could use a few tins together to create more of an impact, or even use a vintage biscuit tin as a planter for your favourite herbs or flowers. These could then be used as thank you gifts after your wedding. You can find vintage style tins in charity shops, car boot sales, eBay and maybe even in your granny’s pantry!

Here are some of our favourite vintage tin wedding decoration ideas.

Picture of a Moss Flower Basket from The Flower CompanyWhen you are planning your wedding flowers, it is often difficult to decide what to give the smaller members of your bridal party – young bridesmaids and flower girls. Do you give them small bouquets, a single flower, a pomander?

We were contacted recently by Zoe from The Flower Company who has been creating these amazing flower girl baskets in moss.

These are really beautiful little baskets and perfect for the younger girls. Not only does it give them something pretty to hold, they are also superb baskets for carrying confetti or petals in if you are asking them to scatter petals whilst walking down the aisle.

Each basket is handmade to order and created from a wire base so they can be made to any size and shape specified by the bride. The framework is wired together ensuring all wire edges are covered to avoid any sharp edges that may cause damage to dress fabrics or small people! Once the frame is made, it is then covered in moss.

The dried moss is available in several natural shades as well as a variety of colours, so baskets can be coordinated to wedding colour schemes or left natural.

Ribbons and ribbon roses add to the decoration and can contrast or coordinate with colour schemes. Fresh flowers can be wired in on the day to add an extra wow factor, and each basket is filled with fresh (or preserved) rose petals according to the bride’s specification.

To add an extra detail, baskets can be filled with fresh flowers to coordinate with other bridal attendants.
These handmade baskets are made to order and prices start from £30 each.

If you are looking for something extra special for the youngsters in your bridal party these are a fantastic idea.

Interview With: Heidi Baker

Company Name: The Flower Studio

Website: www.flowerstudio.im

Location: St Johns, Isle of Man

How did The Flower Studio get started and how long has the business been going?

I opened the Flower Studio about a year after I graduated from Writtle College in Chelmsford with my Foundation Degree in Professional Floristry and Degree (Hons) in Horticulture.  Whilst I was studying at college I was really lucky to work in 2 top London florists, so when I returned to the Isle of Man I decided I wanted to open a shop that reflected the styles I had grown to love while working in London.  The shop has now been open since March 2009 and is getting busier all the time.

Picture of Heidi Baker From The Flower Studio Isle of Man

Is it just you or do you have a team?

I work full time (i.e. 7 days a week!) and I have 2 part time florists, 1 part time driver and a couple of freelance drivers and florists that help me out at peak periods such as Valentines Day, Christmas and Mothers Day.  My family are also great at stepping in, and love helping me dress a big venue for a wedding!

Picture of a Mixed Rose and Hydgrangea Bridal Bouquet from The Flower StudioWhere is The Flower Studio based, do you have a shop? Which areas of the UK do you cover?

We are based in St Johns on the Isle of Man and deliver all over the Island directly from the shop.  We are also a Premier Interflora Member, so people can order gifts through us to go worldwide.  As far as wedding flowers go, if someone off the Island wanted to use us for their wedding, I would never say no, but obviously there would be expenses costed in with the flowers.  A friend of mine is getting married abroad in a couple of years time and she has said she might bring me along with her to do her flowers!

What type of flowers can you provide for a wedding?

We provide whatever the bride wants!  I love being creative and if the bride asks for something really different and unique I see it as an exciting challenge.  Even if their heart is set on having a simple posy of roses, I always try and add something to the bouquet to make it personal to them – such as a family brooch or a bespoke collar… one bride asked me to hide an old photo of her Grandmother who had recently passed away… no-one else could really see it, but it meant so much to the Bride.

What sets The Flower Studio apart from other wedding florists?

Something I am really passionate about is the environmental aspect of the floristry industry.  We are a member of Fair Flowers Fair Plants, and I try and source as many of my materials as possible from growers who operate under labels such as this, as that means there has been as little environmental impact as possible and the workers have been treated and paid fairly.  We also recycle all our card, paper and plastic waste, and the green waste from the shop goes onto my compost heap, which I am hoping will contribute to some flowers that I am planning to grow myself next year.  We also use local growers from the Isle of Man for seasonal flowers such as Dahlias, Chrysanthemums and Gladioli.

Picture of a Purple Bridal Bouquet from The Flower StudioWhat has the trend been for wedding flowers in 2010 and what do you think will be the trend for 2011?

Purple was a very popular colour in 2010, which I loved as it is one of my favourites!  Vintage shabby chic is a trend that was popular in 2010, which I think will carry on in 2011 judging by the consultations I have done so far.  Also because everyone has tightened their belts a bit recently, more brides are going for the DIY approach, so they buy the flowers off us and arrange them themselves.  To fit in with this we offer a Wedding Flowers workshop for brides-to-be to come along to and pick up the basics and a few tricks of the trade.

Does The Flower Studio have a specialist floral area?

I love working with natural materials such as twigs, leaves, wool and moss, to create bouquets and displays that are really earthy and rustic. I also enjoy creating designs with coloured wire and other contemporary materials.  I think our specialist area is that we like to push the boundaries a bit and be unique.

Picture of a Pink Rose Bridal Bouquet from The Flower Studio

What are your top tips for choosing wedding flowers?

  • Set a budget before you speak to your florist. This will let them know from the start what kind of displays to suggest to you.
  • Choose your dress first. Again, the style of your dress will help the florist suggest designs for your flowers.
  • Photos/Mood Board. Keep a record of any photos or styles that you like together or create a mood board.  A lot of brides start off with one idea and then this idea changes three or four times before final decisions are made… by this time, you might have forgotten something really amazing that you saw right back when you first got engaged.
  • Don’t let other people make up your mind for you!! Whether it is your mum, your maid of honour, or even your florist… if your heart is set on having something, you shouldn’t be made to feel like you are having to compromise!  Obviously seasons can play a part in what flowers you have, so having a wedding in October and wanting spring flowers might be a bit tricky to pull off, but a good florist should always be able to suggest suitable alternatives.

Do you have a favourite floral arrangement that you have made?

Picture of a Large Shower Bouquet With Cottage Flowers by The Flower StudioI have so many favourites!  One was a large shower bouquet made with cottage garden flowers and lots of pretty trailing flowers (a lot of them grown locally). I fell in love with it so much while I was making it I wanted to keep it myself!  So many of the guests have been in to the shop since saying it was the most beautiful bouquet they have seen too!  I got a lovely email from the bride saying it was exactly what she had pictured for her wedding bouquet since she was a little girl!  I can’t wait to get a copy of the official photos!  We also got asked to make a wedding bouquet for a film due out next year called Decoy Bride (starring David Tennant and Kelly McDonald), and not only did I love the bouquet but got extremely excited about the fact that my work was going to be on the silver screen!

What is your favourite flower?

That would be impossible to choose!  It changes with the seasons:  Spring, I love the scent of Narcissi and Hyacinth; Summer,  I am a sucker for big blowsy Hydrangeas and Delphiniums; Autumn, the colours are fantastic, large bronze Chrysanthemums mixed with natural foliage such as oak or beech and Winter, Amaryllis, Pussy Willow and of course all the Christmas foliage such as pine, and holly!
