Ok, so there is now another shift in bridesmaid fashion.  Why is this important? Well, the ladies colours dictate nearly everything required of us mere mortal formal wear stores when it comes to groomswear trends.

Set to continue are the popular colours purple, fuchsia, turquoise and orange.  These colours have made recent weddings very exciting, lively and very noticeable on the eye, however they are not necessarily easy to fit into a guy’s outfit. To combat what was a good problem to have, I designed new waistcoats with deliberately co-ordinated pure silk neckwear. Natural fibres are the only way to really show off such vibrant colours and of course exude class.

The recent National Wedding Show at Earls Court opened my eyes to the next potential shift in bridesmaid colours.  These are a shelly coral type of colour and a mink pink type of shade. The good news is that these colours are easy to add to any outfit as they pretty much co-ordinate with any suit colour…

Bride and groom jumping on a beach

Image from Flickr by Fevi Yu

Do winter weddings have a theme?  Does a summer wedding look different to an autumn wedding? What do you wear if you marry on a beach?

My experience tells me that the look of the wedding suit or attire is more about co-ordinating with the wedding colour scheme than the time of year or location. Granted, the bride may have chosen a seasonal colour, but generally speaking the colour scheme will be determined by a bride’s favourite colour or by the dress of her dreams.

Beach Weddings

This is a very iffy and contentious subject.  Personally I love the loose linen rolled up trouser, baggy linen shirt with a Panama hat look. However, I am not sure how ‘formal’ it is. When I see this type of picture I love it, but then the chap is next to a bride in a full blown wedding dress.  This is not a good mix in my eyes, so what about a nice, really trendy fitted suit, in a supremely lightweight, light brown or grey fabric…

Groomsmen wearing coordinating outfits

The biggest talking point with the weddings that I look after is how to distinguish a groom from his best man, his best man from the ushers, or his wedding party from any guests that may dress up.

As with most wedding issues, opinions, what the etiquette books say, what your sister did at her wedding and so on can all play a part in your decision making.  Having helped many a wedding through the quagmire or myriad of colours, styles and aunt Flo’s opinion, I say just choose what you are comfortable with, take the professionals advice as to the combinations available and don’t complicate your look. In fact, if you break it down it really isn’t that complicated…

Can formal attire be ‘funky’? Yes it can.

Funky Formal Attire

The problem with formal wear is just that, it is formal.  So how do you modernise or ‘funk’ up this sort of thing?  Over the last few years my way of achieving this has been to modernise the fit and ‘up the ante’ with regards the quality of fabric offered.

There is a limit however to what can be achieved; how many exclusive fabrics can be used or how fitted or tight the designs can become. So what is next step?  Thankfully Wilvorst have come up with some very different and dare I say radical new designs for 2012 and beyond.  The jury is still out regards the designs, how dated the look may become and certainly the shiny fabric, but interesting ideas none the less.

You will see by the picture accompanying my article that the new coat style is worn with a dark waistcoat and trousers, as well as a loose cravat worn inside the shirt…

Wedding waistcoats

If you wear a suit to work and don’t want to wear tails at your wedding what do you do?  Simple, buy or hire a suit and add a waistcoat.  Ideally this will co-ordinate with the suit and neckwear, but a waistcoat can also reflect your personality; flamboyant may be your thing.

A waistcoat is a garment that will definitely enhance any outfit, and of course will also ensure that whatever you choose looks less like an everyday outfit.

A waistcoat is also a way of differentiating the groom’s outfit from those of the groomsmen should there be any…

Types of Groomswear

I believe that a suit reflects you and your personality.  Are you cool, calm, funky, trendy, short, tall, flamboyant, quiet etc?  You probably get my drift.

There does seem to be this illusion that you have to wear this or wear that just because it is a wedding.  This isn’t or shouldn’t be the case, but your wedding is a time to dress up, and yes, possibly in something you wouldn’t wear on a daily basis such as tails…

How to Choose a Groomswear Supplier

Given that I got married last year, I speak from experience when I say that in terms of groomswear, who you choose is as important as what you choose.

Throughout the whole planning of a wedding you can be a little overwhelmed by the choices on offer in all areas, not just your men’s clothing.  Which wedding photographer do you choose when they all look as good as each other?  Which bridal shop do you use as each of the two or three you like are as good as each other? Do you go with venue A or venue B?  These choices will determine whether the planning of your wedding is enjoyable or not.

So how do you choose?…

Wedding suit from Hugh HarrisI am intrigued to find out what Prince William will be wearing at his wedding. Will it be uniform, traditional top hat and tails created by a royally appointed bespoke tailor or something a tad more contemporary such as a really sharp fitted suit?  I have to assume that it would be the traditional top hat and tails, but what can be done to bring this style bang up to date?

Having seen the royal chaps most elegantly dressed by some of the finest suit makers in the world over the years, traditional fabrics with the traditional type of fitting will more than likely be the order of the day.  Well let’s see what we could do to take this traditional idea and transform it into a modern version…
