Interview With: Sally Orchard
Company Name: Sally Orchard – Make-Up Artist
Location / Coverage: Cornwall / Devon
How did Sally Orchard – Make-Up Artist get started and how long has the business been going?
I started out as a beauty therapist 20 years ago. There weren’t any make-up courses near me so I did beauty therapy instead, and then ended up working in salons and stores in Birmingham, Cornwall and London. I always loved the make-up side of the business and I was always the one who would do the make-up lessons and brides. I started my own make-up business 10 years ago specialising in bridal special occasion make-up. The last 2 years I have experimented with fashion and glamour make-up but wedding make-up remains the main part of my business.
What services do you provide?
I offer bridal make-up, make-up lessons, makeovers and fashion/editorial make-up.
What areas of the UK do you cover?
I mainly cover Cornwall and Devon but I have travelled to other areas when needed.
Do you just provide make-up services for the bride?
I offer make-up services for the whole wedding party. I have an assistant who works with me on large weddings but I am always the one who designs the look.
Why would you recommend female bridal party members have their make-up done by a professional on the day of the wedding?
How you have your make-up on your wedding day can make a huge difference to how confident you feel and also how positive your reaction is to the photos afterwards. Even natural make-up can give the skin a glow and colour that can be sapped from the face with flash photography. My job is to get the right balance between a look that enhances but is comfortable.
How many trials do you have with a bride?
Normally one is enough but I do more if the bride wants to try another look. One bride for example originally wanted red lips so I did that in the trial, but afterwards she didn’t feel it was her so we did another trial with softer lips which she preferred.
What sets Sally Orchard – Make-Up Artist apart from other make-up artists?
I love make-up and enjoy transforming brides and seeing their confidence grow. I believe make-up doesn’t have to be thick and heavy to look good. I use make-up to bring out the best in my brides’ features, and my calm, friendly approach is a must on the wedding morning when nerves can be at their highest.
What’s the most popular style of bridal make-up that your clients ask for?
A natural, dewy look.
What’s the best thing about your job?
I feel privileged to be a part of the wedding morning with the bride and bridal party as this is such a huge moment. What other job is there where everyone is so happy and excited?
What are your top wedding make-up tips?
Bring a picture of a make-up look you like to give the make-up artist some idea of what look you want. Their idea of a natural look may be different to yours. Also get your skin in tip top condition before the big day as make-up can only do so much. If your skin looks good so will your make-up
