How did Elle Hitchens get started and how long has the business been going?
After training with the London College of Fashion I decided on a complete career change and started assisting at Fashion Shows, then built up my own clients by working with various photographers. I went on to work for MAC Cosmetics for two years but decided to take the step to become completely freelance and focus on weddings. I have now been working in the industry for 5 years.
What areas do you cover?
All over the South West and even further afield if necessary, I’m happy to travel!

I am a sole trader and have a background of graphic design and events management before changing career to pursue make-up artistry.
We’re the largest and most influential UK breast cancer charity. Through the generous donations from our supporters and fundraisers (who come up with increasingly imaginative ways to raise money) we’re able to fight breast cancer on three fronts: research, campaigning and education.
How did Breakthrough Breast Cancer come about and how long has the charity been going?
Breakthrough is still quite a young charity. We were founded by Bill Freedman who lost his wife Toby Robins to breast cancer. Bill had a vision of a better way to beat breast cancer with scientists dedicated to breast cancer research; this led to the opening of the Breakthrough Research Centre in 1999.
We’ve come such a long way since we were founded. Today we have more than 10 clinical trials thanks to our scientists research. Patients are being treated with drugs developed at the Breakthrough Research Centre and this is what our fundraising is all about, real results for patients with breast cancer. We’re all really hopeful for what we can achieve in the next 10 years.
How is Breakthrough Breast Cancer involved in weddings?
We like to think we can offer an alternative to couples who have everything they need with donations in lieu of gifts. Our pins as wedding favours are also a lovely way for your guests to take away with them a special reminder from the day whilst also supporting a cause which affects so many people. Really, we want to give people the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of thousands of people who are affected by breast cancer.

There are great ways to get involved; whether you choose pins as wedding favours, a collection can at the bar or donations in lieu of gifts – you can remember someone special to you and, at the same time, help us get a step closer to beating breast cancer.

Final Touches provides a bridal hair and make-up service.
How did Final Touches get started and how long has the business been going?
Final Touches got started when a friend who is a make-up artist asked me to help do the hair at a wedding in 2002. I really enjoyed the experience and started helping her more and more. I soon realised I preferred the wedding work and freedom of working freelance rather than being employed. I already had hair and make-up skills but decided to take a few refresher courses in bridal hair and make-up. Then, after much consideration and deliberation I decided to set up Final Touches and haven’t looked back since.
Who works at Final Touches and what are your backgrounds?
Final Touches is solely run by myself but I call upon other freelance hair and make-up colleagues who I have worked with over the years when I have a large bridal party.
My background has always been in the beauty industry and I started as an apprentice hairdresser on leaving school and completed a City and Guilds 3 year course. I then worked on board cruise ships for a number of years, travelling to numerous countries and began training in make-up when I returned. I’ve worked for Virgin Atlantic in the upper class lounge as a stylist and educator to air stewardesses about to undertake abinitio training. I’m a qualified teaching assessor and have a Cert Ed in adult education.
Why should a bride and female members of the bridal party have a professional to do their hair and make-up on the day of the wedding?
When a bride chooses a beautiful dress, jewellery and shoes, and thinks hard about what photographer to choose, I think it’s important to complete the look with professional hair and make-up. Your wedding photos are something you will want to treasure and look your best in, so having flawless make-up and beautiful hair is a must for every bride.
This also makes for an enjoyable wedding morning spent with your bridesmaids, stress free and being pampered without the hassle of having to go to a salon.

How did Hayley Ruth Photography come about and how long has the business been going?
Hayley Ruth Photography has been going for about 5 years now, but I gave up my full time employment 2 years ago to run the business full time as I was so busy with the photography and it’s where my passion lies.
What sets Hayley Ruth Photography apart from other wedding photographers?
Ensuring my clients feel comfortable in front of the camera. I spend time getting to know my clients and having fun with them in front of the camera before the big day. Having your picture taken shouldn’t be a traumatic experience, especially on your wedding day, so this is a really important part of what I do for my clients.
When my clients say to me, “Let’s do a few more”, it’s just the best moment!
What’s the best thing about your job?
Where to start with this one? I love everything about it. Taking pictures is obviously a passion, sharing in someone’s special day, seeing those happy emotions and capturing those key moments for someone to treasure, seeing clients tears when they see their wedding images for the first time, delivering their wedding album, oh the list goes on. But most of all it’s probably the friendships I develop with my clients, it means so much!
Does Hayley Ruth Photography have a specialist area or style of photography?
My style is about relaxed images that have style. I am always looking to provide my clients with images that express them as individuals, not giving them images off a recipe card of wedding images must haves. I spend time with each client exploring their venue and talking about the style of images they like, so their images will be unique to them.
Undercover Superstars are a fun act that we put together for weddings & other events. Basically, we hide vocalists undercover at the wedding, usually during the wedding breakfast (but not always!) as Waiters, Bar Staff, Event Managers, Chefs, Firemen….even Guests! At the given moment, one of the characters will draw attention to themselves, lull your guests into the false belief that they are who they say they are, and then burst into song and shock everyone! Then, one by one, each vocalist will come out of the woodwork.
Our singers are fantastic performers and usually end up sprinting around the room, dancing on the tables and quite often, whirling your gran or your cousin around the dance floor! We are the first (and currently only) company to do this with modern singers. There are a lot of opera-based companies out there, but our vocalist perform music from artistes like Robbie Williams, Aretha Franklyn, Queen, Christina Aguilera etc. It’s great fun!
How did Undercover Superstars get started and how long have you been going?
We’re a relatively new act. We launched in Jan 2009, but have become incredibly popular, I think due to the originality of the act, being the only people to perform modern music. We run MIB Music Ltd, which has been running some of the UK’s top function bands for the last 6 years. We saw a gap in the market that just had to be filled!

What service can Undercover Superstars provide at a wedding?
We’ve got lots of scenarios that have worked well at weddings. My favourite one is where we have two undercover guests and one ‘event manager’. Our undercover guests spend the afternoon milling around with the other guests, saying they met the happy couple on holiday last year. During the meal, the female guest is obviously getting rather tipsy and stumbles up to the microphone that’s set up for speeches. She drunkenly announces that she wants to propose to her boyfriend! She gets down on one knee and begins to sing (terribly) ‘I will always Love You’….he jumps up, says ‘Of course I’ll marry you, as long as you stop singing!’…he then launches into song and the show starts from there, featuring our female guest suddenly getting her vocal chords back, and our event planner coming out of the woodwork! This is great fun, and I’ve never seen such a reaction than when our singer announces she wants to propose! The look on the guests faces is priceless!
