Interview with: Vicky Casey (Director at Crumb.)
Company Name: Crumb.
Location / Coverage: Based in Leeds / Nationwide Coverage
What does Crumb. do?
We send cake gifts by post nationwide. All our lovely cake boxes are letterbox friendly and are a lovely way to say thank you to a friend or relation. Our signature product is a full afternoon tea party: tea, cakes, doilies, napkins and cake toppers – perfect for an impromptu bridal shower or girly session. We even have a cake and cocktails box to add a bit of extra fun to proceedings – a lovely Hen Party treat. All our boxes come with a handwritten gift card so you can send your personal greeting with cakes!
How did the business start and how long has it been going?
Crumb was founded in 2011 as a new venture to provide nationwide letterbox friendly cakes. We wanted to provide an alternative to sending flowers or chocolates as a gift by post, and thought cakes would be a lovely thing to receive through your letterbox. Adding the gift card was an important part of our service so that people could send a complete gift.
Who works at Crumb.?
Crumb was started by Vicky and Helen, two new mums looking for a more flexible work life balance. We are based in Leeds and have a background in bakery and design. We remain a flexible hours business and we find this enables Crumb to offer better customer service as orders can be processed in the evening and dispatched within 2 days.
What areas of the UK do you cover?
We send our cakes nationwide; one box could be going to Aberdeen, the next to Plymouth.
What tea party boxes does Crumb. currently offer?
We have many different tea party boxes, ranging from a tea for two right up to a full afternoon tea and cocktails party. We are always happy to look at bespoke orders as well if people want to order for a bigger party or wedding.
What is in each box?
Always delicious handmade cakes, napkins and a gift card, then a choice of tea, coffee or hot chocolate; some boxes have cocktail syrups and recipe cards, cake toppers, doilies, and even origami!
Who makes the cakes that are in each of the boxes?
We source the cakes from one of the finest bakeries in the region: The Exquisite Handmade Cake Company. They are based in Leeds and they also supply York Racecourse and other key corporate clients.
Your tea party boxes are a great idea for hen parties; what other wedding / events can Crumb. cater for?
We can cater for the wedding itself if people want to hold an afternoon tea party as part of the celebration. It’s a lovely transition for straight after the service too; top your guests up with dainty cakes while you go off to have some photos taken and they won’t be so hungry waiting for the wedding breakfast, and a lovely ice breaker as well so people can chat about the beautiful ceremony and gather themselves before setting off to the reception. Most churches and venues have a separate hall or second space where you can have a friend set the cakes out and let people mingle. Our afternoon tea party boxes also make a lovely treat for the bride and her bridesmaids on the morning of the wedding – who feels like a full breakfast on the morning of her wedding? Some dainty cakes on doilies with a cute flag in and maybe even a Champagne cocktail? Yes Please! Our smaller tea for two boxes make a lovely thank you gift for after the day – if someone was extra helpful we even have one with a gift card that says “Even Superheroes Need a Tea Break”.
How do people order a tea party box?
What sets Crumb. apart from other companies providing wedding catering?
All our cakes are handmade and we aren’t a standard catering company. Weddings are one part of our customer base so no one pays more just because the word “wedding” has been used. If anything, we are likely to charge you less if you order for a wedding as we can offer a small discount on larger orders.
Random question… If you were on a desert island, what one item would you have with you and why?
A box of our Yogurt Topped Cranberry Tiffin. It’s simply delicious and would cheer us up until a handsome sailor came to rescue us!
